Saturday Rides - Summer 2015

1st sat of month Garsons Farm - West End Esher
2nd sat               Ockham Bites - Wisley A3
3rd sat                West Horsley Garden Centre
4th sat                Polesdon Lacey Nat Trust
5th sat                Stoke D'Abernon Garden Centre

Mountain bike rides sometimes deviate to other venues according to weather. If wet they sometimes go to The Medicine Garden, Cobham or The Vinerys Garden Centre, Bookham. They also prolong the ride if conditions are perfect, and end up at a pub on the way home!

All rides meet 10am sat Horton Country Park carpark by the toilets.

Sat and sun autumn rides

Now the clocks have changed we go into the winter rides list, which is the same as summer except the Ockham Bites is now The Vinerys Lower Bookham as its warmer. The sunday rides start at 9.30 to avoid any frost. This week we had a good turnout sat at Garcons farm, 16 I think. Dave, Lee, Nick and I did the sun ride to the new Cycle café in Esher. Giro. Lovely cakes and really nice coffee. They have locks if you need one! I would urge any of the members who fancy trying our rides to come along and make our club more sociable off season. Also we would like to see more coming down the club room at 9pm Green lanes Worcesterpark Athletics club.

Sat rides for summer

As the clocks have changed we go on to summer rides list, which is The Vinerys changes to Ockham bytes. On the 2nd sat of month. Some riders have expressed a need for a longer ride sat to meet up with the usual lot at 11s! We could start 9.30 and do an extra 10 miles, but I need feedback and someone to lead the ride!

saturday rides nov to march

from november the rides will be as follows
1st sat Garsons Farm
2nd    Vineries garden centre
3rd     West Horsley garden centre
4th      Polesdon Lacey
5th      Stoke D'Abernon Garden Centre (Stoke Dabbs)

As you have noticed we have swapped Stoke for Horsley as we enjoy the longer ride, and Ockham Bites is too cold so back to the Vineries, which is nice and warm!
If it is snowing or really really wet we usually go to shortest venue which is Stoke Dabbs! So if you plan to go straight there text someone to check!!

Polsden Lacey & VTTA Lunch

Baby (or grand daughter) sitting prevented me from riding out on Saturday 28 Jan but I introduced Millie to my clubmates and she enjoyed meeting you all especially Toni de!
Congratulations to Luke on the 5 week early arrival of Elspeth we all hope that mum and baby are doing well and that you will be back on your bike soon. You need to vent your frustration on the Surrey Hills asap

Before setting off home Millie had a go on the vegetable delivery bike and I hope it's not too soon before she is out riding with me! I would love to get a Kidies seat for her on the back of my bike but on a straw pole taken with my so called cycling mates they all said that due to my individual style of riding it is definetly not recommended! Strangely enough Barbara, Vanessa & even dad Wes seem to agree!

Turning to matters more veteran KPRC were both well represented and rewarded at the Surrey/Sussex VTTA annual lunch at Rowfant House splendidly organised by Ann Bath. The food was upto it's usual high standard (refer to Forum article on Sunday rides). Ray is seen here being presented by John Warnock guest of honour with his award for best age standard 25.

Ann is also presented with her National 24hr Ladies trophy for winning the 2011 Ladies Nat Championship organised by the Surrey/Sussex VTTA by Esther Carpenter.
Jake also received multiple awards and medals for both 10 and 25 mile best performance but unfortunately due to poor performance by photographer she was too quick for me and gone like a flash ( just like all of the events I rode against her in 2011 especially the 100). If anyone would like to see a blurred image I do have a photo as she raced away from Keith Warnock before my camera had time to focus. Anyway Jake you are our fastest Lady and we are all very proud of your achievments this year and look forward to our annual Dinner at the Burford Bridge when we can applaude you and Ann and all the other winners for a fantastic season.

Cheam and Morden Hilly 50

Because a number of our members are involved with the Cheam and Morden CTC section and assist with the running, there is a common misconception that the Kingston Phoenix run the Hilly 50, which is being run this weekend (Saturday March 5th).

We don't - hence minimal mention of it here - although Jake will certainly be there helping and we have encouraged support of the event (as riders) over the years, and I know a number of members are planning on riding.

Anyone looking for details of the event can use the link above or go to the South West London DA website, where there is also an online entry form for those who would like to enter in advance.

As a result of this, I would think that there is likely to be minimal turnout for this week's Saturday morning ride, which would normally be going to Garsons Farm. Jake definitely won't be there to lead, and I understand that neither Pete nor Simon will be out either, so anyone wanting to do the usual Saturday 11's ride needs to be ready to lead themselves. With the numbers out recently, I'll be surprised if there is no one at Horton, but I probably won't get to find out either way!

13th March sat ride

Not too cold today, I was on my new racing bike so the fast ride was very fast this week with Simon keeping the speed up at the front and me tucked in. Simon moaned I wasnt much protection when I was on the front , so I got in to race mode very low position and he moaned louder ! Good to see Brian out today. Looks like we will be going back to Burford Bridge next year as everyone seems keen. They will keep prices low again. Asking around the other clubs I think our dinner is now the most glamorous in Surrey !

Saturday ride to Polesden Lacey Feb 27th

A slight drizzle turned into a very pleasant morning to Polesden Lacey. 3 groups of 4, steady, Quick & muddy plus Ray just up the hill from home! Next week it is different as most will be at Rykas Boxhill either riding, helping or photographing the C&M Hilly 50K at 09.30am for a 10am start.
Garsons Farm for anybody else.

Sat Ride 20th Feb

Very frosty and icy, but still lots out, 11 on road bikes and 5 off road. Met Andy Avis at Stoke on his bike. Brian, Doreen and Ron by car and good to see Paul Day on foot, still cant drive or cycle due to opp on hand since crash!
Fast group was led by Graham as I had wisdom tooth out wed under general anasthetic and still don't feel right. Lovely sunny day but patches of ice. Great to see Jackie out today on bike in good spirits. Brian gave out tickets for club dinner next week, 111 people going, which is a club record for many years!

Sat ride to Ockham bites

Very cold ride today, but still a good turnout. People starting to think about training now, so the fast group went fast, with Simon on the front for the first half. Then Steve took over and powered along till he blew, Nick then flew past and stayed on the front all round the extra circuit to the tea stop! Alex stayed in the fast group looking very comfortable and overtook most riders on the steep hills ! More people wearing team kit which is good to see as it makes us look semi pro.

Saturday ride to Garsons Farm Feb 6th

Alex
Jeff
Simon
Spring is in the air! The Brisk group of 12 done the extra loop (2 miles) leaving Big Eric and me to have a gentle ride only being caught with 1 mile to go by an extended flying fragmented gang of the others. Dave Mathews a welcome new rider off road on a sat plus Jen & Keith completed the line up. Simon Waller is now a Phx member complete with new bike & beard! Jeff from Fulham joined us Welcome come again.

West Horsley Jan 30th

Very cold but dry found 16 riders en route to West Horsley several places where the roads were still damp caused a short dismount but no problems.
A discussion on fixed wheel machines arose after a study of Nick Hostler's gleaming 3-speed fixed gear bike, it seems within the Phoenix at least 12 people ride currently a single or fixed wheel machine ie: PM, Lisa, Simon, Iain, Joe B, John B, Ray D, Frank C, Steve H, Grant P, Florence, Nick H.

Saturday 23rd January

After a string of dodgy Saturdays, weatherwise, the ride from Horton attracted 11 on road and 5 off road on the route to Polesden Lacey.

Grant was a puncture victim.

Welcome to newcomer Alex. Also nice to meet tall Dave from the Wheelers who plans to ride the Kingston to Worthing again, and also to see us at the Club Dinner.
