Congrats to Simon on his first 100, Mike on his first 100 for over 45 years and commiserations to Jake on missing the record again, despite another excellent ride on that course and also to Brian and Philip for whom it all went horribly wrong.
Jake's ride is an age record, however.
Thanks to everyone for the "marshalling" - you know who you are!

Tonight's Evening 10 - CANCELLED
Tonight's Evening 10 is officially CANCELLED
Frank has just phoned me - he has been out to check on the state of play with the roadworks and although the roadworks themselves have just about been completed the cones will not be removed in time for us to race tonight, so Frank has made the decision to cancel the event now so that everyone can be informed and hopefully not turn out at Dorking tonight for no reason.
This decision is not taken lightly, or just on a whim due to 'elf and safety. There is a lot of goodwill with the locals at Holmwood and Surrey Police and selfishly running our event where the road is narrowed greatly will do nothing for our club, or the course which is made use of by large numbers of riders over the course of any given week.
As Club Secretary, I fully endorse Frank's decision.
There are a further two club 10s on our calendar for you all to compete in instead.

A Weekend in the Alto Adige
This trip had its beginnings on Christmas Day. Henry, my son and I were leafing through a book of Alpine Cols that I had been given as a Christmas present and we commented that we had never ridden the Stelvio. Christmas festivities overtook the thought, but a few days later I got an email from Henry's office address which said 'I can do the Stelvio on the 17th July'.
So that was that.
Last Saturday, we flew out to Verona and drove up to Bormio, which is a good base for the Stelvio and a few other passes. On the Sunday morning - the 17th - we set out, and this turned out to be an extraordinarily good choice of time. An Italian building materials supplier, Mapei, that ran a successful cycling team in the '90s, was holding a race up the Stelvio. The road was closed to vehicles, there were food and drink stations and the Alpini had set up generators to light the tunnels. There was also a slightly worrying number of ambulances ...
Starting early, ahead of the main field, we were allowed to ride the course. Quite a number of other cyclists were taking advantage of the opportunity. Henry got to the top before the first racers, I was up with the leading bunch, which is a novelty for me. It was a great ride. We had a cup of coffee in the Stilfserjoch Hotel and, as it was still early, thought that we would ride down the other side to make a double crossing. There are 48 hairpins on that side - Henry would do the lot, and I said I'd do 20 or so as he is quicker than I am. That way we would arrive at the top at about the same time and could reward our efforts with lunch.
So Henry shot off and I busied myself with photography for a few minutes, before heading downhill until I got into the clouds - yes, they were far below us. That was cold and wet, so I turned back without regret and rode back up to the summit. Henry turned up a bit later and we enjoyed a good lunch, before setting off back to Bormio in picking rain. It was a fast run on almost empty roads, which was just as well. A few minutes after arriving at our Hotel the heavens opened.
On Monday morning it was sunny, so we set off to do the Mortirolo. This is the hardest of the climbs on any of the Grand Tours, narrow, winding gloomily through woods and unremittingly steep. Despite this generally poor reputation we found it to be a most enjoyable ride - perhaps the best of the classic passes that we have done. On turn 11 (of 33) is the Pantani memorial - a bit of a mess, to be frank - and, perhaps of greater significance to us at the time was the writing on the road at turn 15. 'Bar Mortirolo Mazzo', it said. Which was where we went when we came down. Just the job.
So, some excellent riding tucked into a short space of time. What about next year? Well, Henry hasn't done Ventoux, so riding the three routes in a weekend would be good. About the 15th July, I think.

Raid Pyrénéen
I've been wondering about the Raid Pyrénéen for a while. It's one of the classic French Randonnées, run by the Cyclo Club Bearnais every summer since 1951. The objective is to ride the length of the Pyrenees, from Mediterranean to Atlantic or vice versa. There are two versions; either 710 km and 18 cols or 790 km and 28 cols. There's a time limit of 100 hours for the shorter and ten days for the longer. The Club supplies a 'Carnet' - a list of control points where you must get your card stamped - and you sort the rest out yourself. When I found that BikeAdventures was running a supported tour for the longer route, it was the obvious choice for me - hotels, detailed route cards and so on all dealt with, and mechanical and logistical assistance if it should be needed.
Eleven of us set off from Cerbère on 23rd June; six Brits, three Americans and two Australians, supported by Mike and Nick in the van. There were some very strong riders and it was an agreeable and supportive group. Mostly I rode with the Americans, but with changes in terrain and tempo we swapped around as we went along and at one point or another everyone rode with everyone else. The weather was mostly good; we had a couple of days of fierce heat - the Col de Menté, the fourth of the day, at 42 degrees Celsius (or 107 Fahrenheit, as the Americans put it) knocked the stuffing out of everyone; and there was some rain and cloud on the Aspin and Tourmalet, but nothing to worry about. Everyone finished the route in time to qualify for the Cyclo Club Bearnais medal, and everyone had a really good time.
Our hotels were used to cyclists, bringing out plates heaped with food and offering more to those who needed it. Equipment was reliable - one puncture between the lot of us, and that over-night. The BikeAdventures route-cards were well worked out - I loaded mine into my Garmin which made route-finding a doddle. The van was there on every Col with water, food and spares and our bags were in our rooms when we arrived each evening. All we had to do was ride, which was what we had come for.
So, last Saturday morning, we all zipped along the Corniche to Hendaye, got our cards stamped and enjoyed a glass of champagne, followed by a long lunch and a noisy dinner.
I rode my Boardman again this year, as it did well in the Pyrenees last. SRAM Rival groupset with an Apex 11-32 rear mech; Mavic Krysium wheels and Continental GP4000s tyres. Trouble free and a pleasure to ride.
So, what to do next year, that's the question ....
