Watch out there is a new Blogger about

As from Wednesday I joined the KPRC ( I didn't know they invited vagrants) but I still have to go thru the committee and 2day Lisa invites me to join the blog, so I have. Thank you Lisa ( I promise not to call you Louise any more and to think I have known you since the Family section days Mol & Rita etc).
Though I am not fabulous yet, I thank Frank and all the others for being so inviting and I will do my best to maintain the clubs moto "The Fabulous Phoenix"
Looking forward to good company, not so serious racing (but competitive - I'll never be another Ray Dare, he is certainly Fabulous) and most of all having a good time with men and especially ladies of like mind i.e fast!.

For the record (and I cannot actualy find a note of my best 10ml, 25ml and 50ml times) though my records are still on the Long Eaton Velo www under (Long Eaton Paragon), the following is what I remember:
10ml TT Short 23min.
25ml TT 1hr 00's
50ml TT 2hr. 00's
100ml TT 4-14-19 Club Champ (13 Nat Champ)
12hr. 253.77mls (5th Nat Championship)
All above were in 1963, the year I met Barbara (since when its been all downhill). My biggest regret was never to get under the hour!!
1962 Club Hill Climb Champion Holy Bank Ambergate 3min 33sec. (still a record - changed hill). Club Hill climb champ 1960 to1964. (where's it all gone!)
1963 Club Bar 24.236mph, Open BAR 23.o66mph
1963 BDCA District BAR Champ. 24.068mph

The above is purely for interest (for those interested) and for all those to wonder how did that fat git do such reasonable times so long ago. Answer I was only 23yrs (and a long way from my prime), 2 stone lighter (10st. 4lb) and until then had not learnt what a bad influence women can be on men!

Championship 10

I would have welcomed a shorter ride today than the excellent "A" ride by Pete Barnard, simply because having joined the KPRC to day, I rode the Club 10 Mile Championship Time trial. I am doubly ashamed to say that I was beaten 4 secs by Toni De. He also did the long "A" ride and ended up with a 29min. 18sec time, which puts him so superior to me as he is 2yrs older. Toni however does not take it serious like me which probably means he is not so competitive. I will get him soon but I also have to beat him on standard which is probably by 30secs? Toni watch out there's a sniper about! Meanwhile I congratulate my elders whom I have much respect for.

Well done to all riders, who battled against the strong South Westerly.

Don’t forget our 50th Kingston – Worthing next year. There is a very strong chance it will be on the same weekend as this year Sunday June 21st.

Fabulous Phoenix Ten

As you know I have had to change the course cutting the distance down from 15 to just 10 miles becuase of long term roadworks on A29.
This is a shame as I have had several entries from Women who wanted to do the 15 miles for club records and would have been prepared to travel some distance to do so. Sadly some have asked for their entries to be withdrawn.

Below is the list of entries received to date. I am holding open the entry for as long as possible just to get the numbers up. We could do with one more entry from the Phoenix at least so we can have a team!
If you want to enter call or e-mail me andyATkprc.org.uk ASAP!

Frank Cubis

Disappointment for many, that the event was not a 25 - due to resurfacing work, of some sort, on the Southwater bypass over-running. Prior to the 07:30 start the northbound carriageway of the A24 was closed along the Southwater bypass and all traffic diverted through Southwater village. The executive decision was that the Interclub course would turn at Hop Oast and be of the order of 20 miles ( I figured just shy of 21m in the end). By the time I got to Hop Oast traffic was coming onto the RAB northbound along the Southwater bypass and I was tempted to ride the full 25 to get the distance under my belt as the weekends are fast disappearing this year. However I was running out of steam and it wasn't hard to turn short.

The weather was kind. Bright and sunny with a light wind in the North and West, giving a tailwind up Tollgate hill and blunting the speed on the way down, but also making the finish harder work than usual.

A big shame about the contractors: John was fired up for a PB (or at least a recent one), Simon had hopes of toppling Jackie off the top 25 spot and Stuart looked as though he could have beaten the hour - if only. I gather that at least one of the Redmon didn't ride when he heard it wouldn't be a full 25.

Thanks to Frank for getting up extra early to put the signs out on the Northern part of the course. I know the course, but not having ridden it for a while it was nice to have all the direction signs confirming that I was going where I ought to be.

We have been so roundly slaughtered by the Redmon that we have had to resort to cheating and include Stuart in the team so as not to make it look so bad!!!! (otherwise our time was 5:49:29).

SCCU 50

If any of the Phoenix want to enter the SCCU 50 on the 29th June 2008 - I will be happy to accept entries at the Interclub 25 this Sunday or at the evening 10 on Wednesday (closing date is Tuesday 17th June). If you are making a cheque out, please remember to make it out to SCCU. Ta.

I dare say that Andy will also be happy to accept entries for the 15/10 at the same events as that also closes on the same date.

Lisa

Update: We still need to provide 2 marshals for this event as the club committment to the SCCU. I anticipate needing help in the HQ, so you could end up with an indoor job if you want - but I do need volunteers.

Entries received to date can be found here and will be updated as more arrive (and I have the time).

Geneva to Nice - please sponsor Emma!

As you may know, Emma is about to do an amazing bike ride from Geneva to Nice, she says:

My epic trip, pedalling from Geneva to Nice covers a distance of 450km over 8 days, incorporating over 13,000 metres of climbing, so with only 5 days to go I'm in the middle of final preparations... PLUS looking to secure more sponsorship :o)
I've chosen to raise money for two extremely worthy charities, DebRA and The Makunduchi Project - So if you'd like to DONATE, please click on these links below. Every penny counts!

DebRA - http://www.justgiving.com/GenevatoNice2008
Makunduchi - http://www.justgiving.com/GenevatoNiceMakunduchi

DebRA is the national charity working on behalf of people affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) - a rare genetic condition which causes the skin to blister and shear at the slightest friction, or even spontaneously.

What your money will do...

· £2.50 'Scratch Mitts' to prevent a baby born with EB from tearing their own skin
· £5 A set of easy grip chunky pens to help children hold a pen when their fingers are fused together from repeated scarring
· £25 One hour of research to bring us closer to finding an effective treatment for EB
· £150 A pressure relief mattress to relieve the discomfort of sleeping

Why DebRA? I suffer from EB (simplex, luckily, so it's manageable) and cycling is one of the sports I can enjoy with minimal impact - So dig deep and donate online!

Donate here: http://www.justgiving.com/GenevatoNice2008

The Makunduchi Project has been designed to renovate, equip and run the hospital in Makunduchi in southern Zanzibar, where many of the 60,000 or so locals have little or no access to healthcare. What your money will do...
· £2.50 A mosquito net for a young mother and child
· £5 A uniform for ward nurses or a set of theatre scrubs
· £25 A mattress for either a standard hospital bed or maternity bed
· £150 A full set of surgical instruments for Caesarean section or an examination couch for the A&E department

Why Makunduchi? I've been lucky enough to be involved with the project through working at MIG - So please help 'Bring the Makunduchi project to life' and donate now!

Donate here: http://www.justgiving.com/GenevatoNiceMakunduchi

Donating through Just Giving is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me:
DebRA and Makunduchi will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Please DIG DEEP!

Many Thanks,
